The minister stated that the government is committed to ensuring food security by adding left-out eligible family members to ration cards on a regular basis. So far, 98.52 lakh beneficiaries have been covered under the PM Ration Yojna, including 8.72 lakh under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), 58.10 lakh in the Priority Household (PHH) category, and 31.70 lakh in the Non-Priority Household (NPHH) category across Jammu and Kashmir. In the Chenani Constituency alone, 2,451 individuals under AAY, 31,780 under PHH, and 22,746 under NPHH have benefited.
The minister also highlighted that children born between 2011 and 2016 have been added to their respective household ration cards to meet the growing food requirements. The criteria for inclusion under the PHH category have been notified and implemented.
Regarding the establishment of new Fair Price Shops, Sharma noted that the government is considering proposals to engage elected representatives to assess the demand and ensure equitable access to ration supplies. Amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Targeted Public Distribution System are expected to facilitate the process.
He clarified that while the bifurcation of ration cards has been halted to comply with the central government’s food distribution targets, the addition of left-out family members will continue regularly. The issuance of new ration cards would necessitate the procurement of additional food grains, which could add to the department’s logistical responsibilities.
The Jammu and Kashmir government remains committed to strengthening its public distribution network and ensuring that no eligible beneficiary is left without food support.
