Kulgam, August 5: The fierce encounter between security forces and militants in the dense Akhal forest area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district has entered its fifth consecutive day, marking one of the lengthiest and most intense anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir this year.

So far, one terrorist was killed on Day 2 (Saturday), but the identity of the slain terrorist remains unconfirmed.

Sources told Sachnews Jammu Kashmir that the operation remains active with intermittent exchanges of gunfire continuing since Friday evening. Despite heavy gunfire on Day 4 and multiple blasts, at least two to three terrorists are believed to still be holed up inside the forest.

To intensify the counter-insurgency effort, the security forces have deployed elite Para commandos, HAL Rudra attack helicopters, high-resolution surveillance drones, and thermal imaging systems to track terrorist movement across the challenging terrain.

"The cordon has been extended and security grids have been reinforced to plug all possible escape routes. Multiple layered perimeters have been established," Sources said.

On Saturday, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat visited the encounter site to assess the situation firsthand and boost the morale of troops on the ground. His visit underscored the strategic importance of the operation and the high level of coordination among various security agencies involved.

As of Monday, the operation was still ongoing, with additional reinforcements deployed in anticipation of a prolonged engagement.
