PAMPORE, August 08:

The Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police on Friday launched a special drive along the National Highway near the Chandhara area of Pampore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district to minimise road accidents.

The drive was supervised by DySP Traffic Pulwama–Shopian, Mushtaq Ahmad, who was accompanied by other traffic officers.

According to an official from the Traffic Department, the crackdown targeted violators, especially two-wheeler riders without helmets, overloading, rash driving, and stunt biking. During the drive, 55 vehicles, including an SRTC bus, were challaned, and a fine of ₹23,400 was recovered from the offenders, officials told Sachnews.

Drivers were counselled on the spot and advised to strictly follow standard operating procedures for safe and accident-free driving. Vehicle operators were instructed to drive within the prescribed speed limits and to avoid overloading, rash or negligent driving, and stunt biking in order to protect precious human lives.

The drive comes in the wake of recent fatal road accidents in the region.

Speaking to Sachnews Jammu Kashmir, DySP Traffic Pulwama–Shopian Mushtaq Ahmad said such drives are conducted regularly, but Friday’s special drive was organised because, over the past month, there have been several accidents on NH44 in the Awantipora sector, resulting in many fatalities. Acting on the directions of senior officials, the drive was launched to check whether drivers possess valid licences.

“If any minor is found driving, their vehicle is seized. Similarly, if a two-wheeler is being driven without a licence or helmet, or if a minor is found operating any vehicle, it is seized. The aim is to make people understand that, especially on NH44, no one should drive without a valid driving licence,” he said.

A total of 55 vehicles were challaned during the drive, and fines amounting to ₹23,400 were collected from violators.

He further told Sachnews that from 1st August till date, a total of 947 challans have been issued in the Pulwama and Shopian districts — including 633 e-compound challans and 272 e-court challans. Additionally, 11 vehicles have been seized, and fines totalling ₹3,27,400 have been collected for various traffic violations.

“My message to the public is that before you leave home, especially if you are riding a two-wheeler, make sure to check yourself — and parents should check their children or anyone else — to ensure they have a helmet and a valid licence. Only allow them to leave home with a helmet. Secondly, I urge parents not to allow minors to drive under any circumstances. Until they have a valid driving licence, do not buy them a vehicle or allow them to drive one,” he said.
