Srinagar, September 3: Continuous rainfall since last night has led to rising water levels across several parts of Kashmir, with South Kashmir being the most affected, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Anshul Garg, said on Wednesday.

“Rainfall was intense from last night, particularly in South Kashmir, while Central Kashmir also witnessed intermittent downpours throughout the night and this morning. As a result, water levels have shown a rising trend at Sangam and Awantipora,” he told reporters in Srinagar.

However, Garg noted that inputs from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) suggest rainfall intensity is expected to reduce after noon, bringing relief by evening.

He said contingency plans of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department are already in place. “At vulnerable spots, such as near the Bones and Joints Hospital, sandbagging work is being carried out swiftly and will be completed shortly,” he added.

In low-lying areas of South Kashmir, where evacuation was required, district disaster management teams under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners have relocated families to safer locations. Similar preparedness measures have been put in place across districts, including Srinagar, where the DC and his team are monitoring the evolving situation.

“Our emergency centres are fully functional, communication systems are operational, and the administration is responding immediately to any emerging situation,” Garg said.

The Divisional Commissioner urged people to remain cautious, avoid venturing near water bodies, and strictly follow advisories issued by district administrations. “We are hopeful that the situation will stabilize in the next few hours, but public cooperation is essential,” he emphasized.
