Pahalgam, May 28: In a significant development aimed at reviving Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the reopening of tourist destinations across the Valley will begin in a phased and responsible manner in the coming days.

While addressing a gathering of tour operators and stakeholders in Pahalgam, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of transparency and confidence-building as key elements in the revival process. "Let’s not focus on what’s closed, but on what’s open. I believe it’s better to speak the truth rather than have tourists feel misled," he remarked, urging tourism operators to adopt open and honest communication with visitors.

CM Abdullah informed that he had personally visited Betaab Valley, a popular tourist spot, to assess the situation on the ground and reassure stakeholders of the government’s commitment to safety and preparedness. “Not all destinations will reopen at once, but some will gradually become accessible,” he stated.

He further assured that tour operators will be actively consulted throughout the reopening process. “Together with the administration, we will ensure destinations are reopened responsibly, in a timely manner,” he added.

Addressing concerns about the recent incident in Baisaran, the Chief Minister acknowledged the need for improved safety measures and better coordination. He emphasized that domestic tourism will play a pivotal role in signaling normalcy and rebuilding confidence, both locally and internationally.

“Once schoolchildren and families start visiting picnic spots again, it will pave the way for international tourists to return,” he said, underscoring the need to focus on restoring internal travel first.

Importantly, the Chief Minister also acknowledged the existence of certain shortcomings and systemic gaps. “We are aware of the gaps — and we will act on them,” he assured.

Concluding on a hopeful note, CM Abdullah reaffirmed his confidence in the tourism industry's resilience. “We have come a long way. What happened, happened. But with your courage and commitment, I am certain we will overcome this and bounce back.”
