Srinagar, June 16:
A new online scam is spreading rapidly across social media platforms like Twitter through sponsored posts that falsely imitate trusted news sources and celebrities to promote fraudulent financial schemes.
In one such case spotted by Sachnews Jammu Kashmir, scammers created a cloned version of a reputed media outlet's website, mimicking its logo, layout, and font styles to appear legitimate. A recent example used the headline “Secret Spilled on Air – Bank Responds with Lawsuit”, featuring an image of a popular singer to draw attention.
These posts are designed to appear like authentic news articles. They falsely claim that a well-known celebrity revealed a "secret method" of getting rich through a mysterious investment platform. The fake article fabricates an entire dialogue between two actresses during a so-called podcast or interview — none of which ever occurred.
The article claims the celebrity deposited ₹20,000 into a platform and watched it grow into ₹35,000 in minutes. It falsely suggests that such interviews have been removed from the internet to protect the economy.
At the end of the article, readers are urged to click on a malicious link to "watch the full podcast" or "register and start earning," which leads to a scam website where victims are prompted to share personal information and deposit money.
Important: These platforms are NOT legitimate.
They are operated by cybercriminals using social engineering and cloned media branding to exploit public trust.
Public Advisory:
-
Do not click on suspicious sponsored posts, especially those using dramatic headlines or celebrity claims.
-
Never share bank or personal details on unverified websites.
-
Always verify the source — clone sites often look identical to trusted media but have unusual URLs (e.g., shortened links).
