Doda, August 26:
District Commissioner (DC) Harvinder Singh on Tuesday said Doda has witnessed continuous rainfall for three days, with very heavy showers last night, triggering flash floods and cloudburst-related damage in several parts of the district—especially the Chenab-adjoining sub-divisions of Gandoh, Thathri and Bhaderwah.
The DC as per Sachnews Jammu Kashmir said cloudburst reports have come from Charwa and Marmat, while a stretch of NH-244 was washed out in a cloudburst incident. “Our teams are on the ground to restore connectivity,” he said.
On casualties and damage, Singh said fatalities have been reported and figures are being updated as verification continues. At least three deaths have been confirmed so far, with casualties from Gandoh and Thathri sub-divisions. He added that about 15 residential houses have suffered damage, along with cowsheds and public infrastructure. A health centre (a private facility) has also been damaged. Three footbridges, mostly in the Gandoh area, have been washed away.
Giving a hydrological update, the DC said the Highest Flood Level (HFL) of the Chenab in the district is 900.5 metres, while the river had reached 899.3 metres by Tuesday morning—roughly 1.2 metres below HFL. “Given the ongoing rain, we expect the HFL could be breached,” he cautioned.
As a precaution, the administration has restricted movement on roads adjacent to the Chenab and shifted residents from low-lying riverside habitations to safer locations. “These steps are aimed at minimising risk to life while the situation continues to evolve,” Singh said, adding that field teams remain deployed for rescue, relief and assessment.
