Sopore, August 18: A 75-year-old fisherman, Ali Mohammad Dar, drowned in the River Jhelum near Hatishah Sopore on Sunday.
Dar, a resident of Muslim Peer, had ventured out for routine fishing when he accidentally slipped and fell into the river.
Soon after the incident, teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and local volunteers launched a rescue and search operation in the area. Boats and divers were pressed into service to trace the missing fisherman.
Authorities said the search operation continued late into Sunday evening and resumed early Monday morning. However, despite relentless efforts, the body of the elderly fisherman had not been retrieved till the time of filing this report.
